From Survivor to Supporter: A Double Amputee Cat Helps Disabled Veterans

In a heartwarming twist of fate, one special feline is making a big impact – not just in the world of cats but in the lives of disabled veterans across the State of Florida. Shay, a double amputee, and beloved therapy cat, is a contestant in America’s Favorite Pet, competing for a chance to win $10,000 for Operation Warrior Resolution (OWR). If Shay wins, these funds would go directly to supporting veterans and their families through the impactful services of this local nonprofit organization.

OWR, a Sarasota-based nonprofit founded by veteran and licensed mental health therapist Kendra Simpkins, is dedicated to providing innovative, holistic treatments for veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and other service-related challenges. Now, Kendra is championing two causes, advocating for our nation’s heroes and also our disabled feline friends, while inspiring others through Shay’s journey of hope and resilience.

“Shay is a true miracle. Rescued with half his body decomposed, he is a double amputee with a prosthetic on the front so he can walk. Shay was adopted in the Middle East and brought back to the U.S. to be a therapy cat for veterans with disabilities – many of whom were also injured in the Middle East due to combat. He’s a testament to resilience, showing those facing challenges or disabilities that they can adapt, overcome, and thrive,” says Kendra Simpkins, Founder and CEO of OWR.

“Winning this contest means OWR can expand efforts to assist more veterans in finding peace and purpose, and we need the community’s support to make it happen.”

How to Vote for Shay

The public can vote for Shay daily at https://americasfavpet.com/2025/shay-b858, bringing OWR one step closer to securing the $10,000 grand prize! Every vote is not just a show of support for Shay but a vote to help veterans receive life-changing care through the services that OWR provides to our veteran community.

As the competition enters a new phase, OWR is calling on the public to rally behind Shay and help turn a cat’s victory into a triumph for our veteran community.
