Music Compound is committed to educating all year long, including when school is out for the summer. In addition to hosting an in-person summer camp, Music Compound launches the Rock Your Summer Reading initiative each year on June 1. For the sixth year, Music Compound is again partnering with area businesses to provide special treats, one-of-a-kind experiences, and cool items as prizes; area youths enjoy the opportunity to receive prizes for every five books they read.

This year, the program runs through August 8. All participants who read 50 books or more will be eligible to be entered into the grand prize drawing for a two-hour karaoke party for up to 20 people – with highlights including a photobooth by SRQ PhotoBooth and bounce house donated by Let’s Jump Rentals – at Music Compound’s Bell Road location in Sarasota. The grand prize-winner will be announced on August 15.

“This initiative continues to engage scores of children, encouraging them to experience the joy of reading and discovery. Last year, 86 children participated – logging just over 3,000 total books – and 68 children qualified for the grand prize drawing by reading at least 50 books,” said Music Compound general studio manager Alyssa Martin. "We are grateful to our business partners, who have been so generous in providing prizes to excite and inspire our young readers – this program simply wouldn’t be possible without their support.”

Some of the prizes students can win include free books, kids’ meals, classes in drama, art and martial arts, free admission to popular area attractions such as Big Cat Habitat and Sun Outdoors, and free music lessons at Music Compound.  

This program is open to all area children. Participants can download a reader passport by visiting MusicCompound.com/read. Each participant is requested to complete the form after each book to inform prize partners; after reading their 50th book, participants are encouraged to drop off their completed passport at Music Compound to be entered into the drawing for the grand prize. 

Last year’s grand prize-winner was Caden Hamvas, who read 50 books. Three of his siblings participated as well.

“The prizes offered through this reading program are exceptional and really motivated Caden and my other children to read a lot over the summer,” said proud mom Krista Hamvas, who noted that last summer was the second year the Hamvas family participated in the program. “I really love how this program motivates kids to read so much.”
