Press Release: Children First Celebrates 26th Annual Fairytale Ball in Dual Milestone Year

Children First hosted its 26th Annual Fairytale Ball on April 11 at Michael’s On East, bringing together a sold-out audience to celebrate the organization’s 65th anniversary and CEO Philip Tavill’s 30 years of leadership.

Children First raised more than $750,000 in total support during the event, with highlights including a live auction and paddle raise.

Themed Little Lives, Lasting Legacy, the evening featured remarks from Vice President of Organizational Engagement Jessica Rogers and event co-chairs Leslie Jones, Dr. Jacque Ray, and Elenor Maxheim. Presenting Sponsors MITER Foundation and PGT Custom Windows & Doors were recognized, with remarks delivered by Rod Hershberger, Co-Founder of PGT Innovations.

A commemorative video reflected on Children First’s history and impact, followed by an engaging live auction featuring three exceptional packages. Highlights included a priceless, one-of-a-kind Heisman Trophy commemorative jacket signed by 2025 Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza and a roster of past recipients, which drew significant interest and spirited bidding from guests, along with a luxurious Lake Michigan getaway and an exclusive private dinner for 10 in Michael’s Wine Cellar at Michael's On East.

A video highlighting Children First’s work across generations introduced keynote speaker Claudia Olivares, a Children First alumna and current educator, whose story reflects both the children served and the lasting outcomes of that foundation. “At one point, I was one of those little lives,” Olivares said. “Now, I’m part of that legacy.”

A paddle raise encouraged additional giving in support of Children First’s comprehensive early childhood education and family strengthening services.

The evening concluded with a special tribute recognizing Philip Tavill, including remarks from Past Board Chair Trevor Harvey and former Board member Hank Battie honoring his 30 years of service.

During Tavill’s tenure, Children First has expanded to serve more than 1,000 children and families daily, strengthened its comprehensive, multi-generational model, and achieved national distinction as a five-time designated Head Start Program of Excellence - consistently ranking among the top 1% of programs nationwide.
