Guests are encouraged to come hungry, grab a seat, and enjoy a basket of nostalgia - on the house for one week only! After the free week they will be available at the Downtown Sarasota restaurant and the bakery located in Lakewood Ranch. The bread basket will include: challah knots, mini kaisers, onion pockets, pumpernickel onion pocket, and salt sticks.
Beginning over 77 years ago, The Original Wolfie’s, became part of a collection of nationally known names in the food industry—Rascal House, Pumpernik’s, Thal Bros. Epicure Market, and Jerry’s Famous Deli (once America’s largest chain of delicatessens)—produced an outstanding array of proven recipes - one of which was the bread basket full of fresh challah knots, kaiser rolls, salt sticks, onion pockets, sliced cocktail pumpernickel, and sliced cocktail challah.
The restaurants became known for its baskets of unlimited assorted varieties of miniature rolls and danishes and stainless steel buckets of half-sour pickles, cold sauerkraut, and other vegetables that were served at no additional cost with meals. The recipes for the bread and danish came from head baker and pastry chef Manny Miklowitz, who learned his trade from his father, Sam Miklowitz, who owned two bakeries in Brooklyn, N.Y. Manny Miklowitz started at Pumpernik's and within a year was chosen by Wolfie Cohen to open the bake shop at the Rascal House in 1954. Manny Miklowitz continued to run the bake shop until he retired in 1974 and continued to reside in Miami Beach with his wife, Esther Gurfein Miklowitz.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate over 77 years of history and our time-tested recipes,” said Jason Starkman, Operations Director of the company. “If you grew up going to Wolfie’s or the Rascal House, you know about the bread basket. Our team has put its heart and soul into bringing the rolls back into production to celebrate our Anniversaries and satisfy the cravings of nearly everyone who grew up on New York deli-style cuisine. We can’t wait to share one of our most nostalgic traditions - the bread basket.”
